Maldivian Boduberu Street Performances in Hulhumale

The following series of Maldivian Boduberu performance Videos were shot in Hulhumale, in Male, Maldives. After we landed in Malé, and moved into the hotel located in Hulhumalé, in the night me and my daughter went out for a stroll when we saw a gathering and noises a bit far… as we walked closer we realized it is a performance on the street.

Little did we knew that we are witnessing the traditional Maldivian dance and music form Boduberu (name of the drum instrument). The trip started off on a great note, with this surprise performance on the streets of Hulhumalé.

The atmosphere was indeed electric, with disco lights illuminating the streets of Hulhumalé. The troop, unfortunately I could not speak to, were part of the Dhammaanu Boduberu. I could understand a few words here and there (some words are similar in Hindi and Dhivehi, the language of Maldives), but largely unheard of lyrics and rhythm.

What surprised me was the energy and the feel I got just standing there with my 5 year old was amazing! I can definitely get some help in naming the songs, as I have little clue what the song names are…

  • Music Review of Acid Factory

    Music Review of Acid Factory

    Movie: Acid Factory

Star Cast: Fardeen Khan, Dino Morea, Diya Mirza, Manoj Bajpai, Aftab Shivdasani, Irrfan Khan

Music: A typical bollywood music, not pleasing to soft music lovers.

A full on rock music this is and its not the one you would like to carry around and listen to. I really didn’t understand the rock music used basically. One song which I liked was Yeh Jism, which is a meaning full song which is underplayed by the background score. The Raftar song is using the Schumacher Song, the F1 car acceleration which does not please me since I am F1 fan. Lyrics are underplayed by loud music that plays along.

Music of the Month: Yeh hai Delhi 6

The charismatic musical emperor he is, A. R. Rahman has casted his magic on the upcoming film “Delhi 6”. Basking in glory of Baftas and Golden Globes, Rahman just delivered another smash hit music for Delhi 6. The musician, who used to be refered in the past as the Plastic musician due to his new dependence on technologicall instruments, has delivered his best ever performance.

If you view it this way, A. R. Rahman has launched quality music for over a decade now. I had the first taste of his music in the Tamil movie Roja. After that, the most captivating (on a national level) was the “Chaiyaa Chaiyaa” where Shahrukh Khan danced on a open train. Moving on to 2005 release of RDB (Rang de Basanti) where he composed a brilliant Punjabi mix which got so popular. (more…)
