In style with Tata Tigor, the styleback car!

It has been 6 months since I drove the Tata Hexa, and it was awesome experience. And this time around I got called for Tata Tigor. Timing of it cannot have been any better, with my birthday around!

I never traveled north of India, with northest I been to was Kutch. Still largely between the equator and Tropic of Cancer. So, this was the first real time I crossed the Tropic of Cancer over India. Flying to Delhi then!

It was the Saturday, week before the event, I got a call from Nihal. He asked if I was interested in driving Tata Tigor? I only had one word to say. You guessed it. A quick word with wife and I had already sent him my details to proceed with booking flights and hotel arrangements.

I did not know who were my fellow passengers to the event. It was only the day before my flight that I knew that gang from Hexa event was there. I felt happier, knowing the people who will be spending the weekend with me.

I leave for Airport before time so that I can enjoy my breakfast at Carnations, courtesy Ola Priority Membership. Yesteryear’s star Zeenat Aman was sitting across my table having breakfast. All I could think of is to remind myself – “do not go asking for a selfie – she is having breakfast!”

Soon I am joined by Sanjay Thampy, Ankit Jain, Sangeeta Yadav and many new faces as we wait for our GoAir flight. After a delay of an hour, I was finally on my way to Delhi, the Kejri-land that I had never been to…

    Tigor Styleback, everywhere!

As soon as we arrived at the arrival terminal, we were directed to the Styleback counter that Tata Motors had set up at the Airport. Everyone got to pick up their route map, luggage badges and ID cards – all custom branded to Tata Tigor Styleback with a sketch design of the car.

Tata’s nailed it this time around – with a lot of general public getting much curious and started even asking around what this stall is all about. Tigor will see more fan following as I figure out later.

From Airport, we were escorted to 1AQ, where the styleback experience was in full swing. I fed myself there, with a tasty pasta and salad for lunch. I am veggie, so had limited options. There were sea food and meat, and I hear they were excellent. And the deserts, I cannot say enough off! Lovely! Look at the pictures.

I left 1AQ in disappointment. Qutub Minar is just a 5-minute walk away, if time permitted. We have very tight schedule, thanks to the congestion in Mumbai Airport that delayed landing in Delhi, by approx. two hours. So, disheartened, I move to the hotel.

Day 1 of Tata Motors’ Hospitality

    Andaz by Hyatt, Delhi Aerocity

I am absolutely surprised as we reach Andaz. It is different. Different than any other hotels I have been to. It was surprising how difficult it is to differentiate among other hotels, but easy if you knew how to do it.

In a true essence Tata Tigor and Andaz Delhi are high on Style! From little things to the ambiance, design and grandeur, Andaz just filled me up. A look at the staff, and no one missed to smile. It makes a huge difference. The crockery is colorful, so is the food. Array of options, the best of what Chefs could make.

I doubted it is called Andaz and not And AZ – since Andaz literally completes everything A to Z! Even got the staff to give me a bite! I would love to go back again. Question is – how soon?

    Tata Tigor Launch Presentation

With a room like the one I got, it did not feel good to leave it for the presentation but that is what I am here for – the car, Tata Tigor. The compact sedan that does not look like one, the hatch back that is not a hatchback.

The way the car has been designed, it has created a new category itself. And Tata Motors got to name it, Styleback. A name not in the dictionary. Unique, and creative.

Then I saw Pratap Bose. He is the guy behind the team that designed Hexa and Tiago. He is the man behind the IMPACT philosophy that makes Tata cars look great! Something that Tata’s sorely missed of-late.

    On to the presentation then!

Tata Tigor features in a jiffy!

Tata Tigor has many a jaw drop with the looks. And features will just add to the weight. Tigor is Tata’s freshest entry into the competitive Compact Sedan arena. Compact Sedans as a category was created by Tata Motors with Indigo CS – taking full advantage of the Govt. tax soaps for cars below 1.4-liter engine and 4 meters in length.

    Tigor Design and Style

Let me tell you that Tigor is the best-looking car around! Period. It is unlike anything in the market today and there is no denying the fact that it beats the competition hands down. It does carry forward the Tiago look and feels through B-pillar, however after that things change for better. This is not your hatchback with a boot.

Head-on, there is not much to differentiate between Tigor and Tiago – the car on which the former is based. Radiator grill and smoked headlight unit with projector headlamps being the difference. Among other things, the diesel variant of the car gets 14-inch tires, and petrol one comes with 15-incher. There is just required amount of chrome, sleek led tail lamps and the nice bumper provide this car the name Styleback!

Tigor gets Harman designed infotainment system with touchscreen. The screen also doubles up as the rear parking camera view – which may not be very efficient. I would have preferred it to show up on the center review view mirror but I am not complaining.

Tigor standout features for your heart!

Apart from the obvious styling differences, Tigor sets a few benchmarks in this segment. Several small things add up to this huge positive vibe I feel about Tata Tigor. The boot lid uses beams instead of hinges which helps in an increase in usage space of total 419 liters of boot space.

6 speaker Harman speakers do a fantastic job, and will ensure you are totally happy even if you are playing Justin Biber! The Infotainment system can connect with your phone and use applications. You get steering mounted controls and voice activation. Tigor comes with Climate Control and that is a segment first. Aircon is strong and quick in cooling the cabin. There are 28 Cubby holes per Tata’s. The rear seat has an arm rest with two cup holders, again a segment first.

The allow rims also come in dual tone which are very nice to look at, so does the color inserts around the aircon vents on the dash matching with the color of the car. Tigor is available in Copper Dazzle, Platinum Silver, Pearlescent White, Espresso Brown, Berry Red.

For your brain: Engine and performance

Tigor is is powered by 1.2-liter Revotron 3-cylinder petrol engine and by 1.05-liter Revotorq diesel engine. Revotron displaces a maximum power & torque of 85ps and 114Nm torque which Revotroq variant is churns out a power output of 70ps and 140Nm of torque.

Both engines come with multiple drive modes, viz. City for peppier performance and Eco for more mileage conscious. Power is transmitted via a 5-speed gearbox. AMT version is not being launched for now, though Tata Motor’s Pratap Bose suggested their target niche for Tigor are women.

Well that is what is on the paper. So how does it drive on the road? Well, Tigor drives nicely and that is a combination of a lot of things. Tigor petrol car’s suspension felt a bit supple which diesel one’s felt a bit stiff. Both cars absorb bumps brilliantly and that is a testament of Tata’s efforts.

For sure, the NVH levels in diesel car were evident and something that is an area of improvement. It is not bad, but something that Tata needs to work on to improve in upcoming versions of the car. Petrol engine is an aluminum block, and lighter of the two by 100kgs, is peppier than diesel. Diesel one needs to push past 2500 rpm, after which it works nicely.

The car handles well, though the route we drove was pretty much highway. It is a comfortable car do begin with and takes potholes with aplomb. It is no Hexa, and not an off-roader. Handling is also neat, there is no body roll and the car feels planted on the road.

    Tata Tigor Unique Review

This is not your normal YouTube review, but a review that is non-journalistic. Do not forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel, Indianomics TV!

    Kitna deti hai?

Though the mileage was not revealed by Tata Motors, but it is evident when we drove the car that petrol returned an average of 15 while the diesel got us 17 kmpl. Keep in mind that these are readings on the dash screen which are not very accurate. At the same time, we all drove the car to test its features and performance and not mileage given the time we had in our hands.

So what is my take on it?

Tigor is a lovely car to come from the stable of Tata. One of the criticisms with Tata cars was always that they are not desirable, but no longer. Tiago, Hexa, Tigor all follow the IMPACT design language that has successfully put Tata back into the game.

It will deliver you goods you are looking for at a budget but will not make you feel compromised. The quality levels are next to the best if not the best, and two engine options are refined too. I will pick up the petrol for its super performance, 15-inch tires and overall ride.

A breakfast ride to Lonavala – first ride for Yeti

So this Breakfast Ride happened with no real plan in place. All of those times when we planned, it never worked out. Ironic, I know. I also know what you are thinking – asia hi hota hai hamesha (it happens always)! My good friends from my workplace, Vishnu and Karan just randomly called me up for an idea they wanted to go through with me to check viability.

And so after that discussion, we just said to each other – lets go for a (more…)

  • 4 months away from an idiot box

4 months away from an idiot box

So I moved into my new house about 4 months ago, and I have not got a TV yet for my home. It has been those four months where I did feel missing the TV around the house, and it absence has definitely helped me use my laptop more. Err.., that is not why I didn’t get the TV yet but then again, I do miss it.

That idiot box is being missed by my wife has been turning this thought around of avoiding TV for some weeks now, especially with my wife wishing to catch up the ongoing T20 after coming home. As I spoke to a colleague today, realized that her child has learned a lot from watching youtube.com and TV also kind of rekindled the thought to get one. The decision is still not been made, but mostly I would give in.

And the reason why I would give in has nothing to do with what others are saying. It has to do with what I am missing out on. If you remember one of my previous posts on the idiot box was about my craze for wild life, travelling and science channels, I have been missing watching them as well. The idiot box, after all is not idiot if the one watching on the other end is thoughtful enough. Not having TV around also means that I am missing out on learning something new from this medium. Watching such channels was never frowned up on by my family unless it was becoming a daily affair and made them miss their regular shows.

The idiot box, after all is not idiot if the one watching on the other end is thoughtful enough.

And one of the things that I want my daughter to do is to pick up these good habits that I have. Like reading when she grows up or never to stop learning – the two of my activities that has held me in good stead. The third one could be blogging, but she is still too young to do that just yet and I would let her decide if she wanted to do it.

What do you think about your idiot box at home? Have you ever thought of getting disconnected from it?

  • Food… err… Vote Security Bill – pay now, reap later

Congress’ plan to hatch the egg before elections is questionable. Everyone sees this as an opportunity to garner votes ahead of the crucial 2014 elections. Even more so since there is a NaMo mania creeping the countrymen and women.

As I set my eyes on horizon for the next year elections, there are two things which are very clear.

    1. BJP does not have the strength of its own to stand guard at National Parliament as things are at present.
    2. Congress’ coalition politics still can work

Food Security Bill would not have been needed if the existing bills worked the way they were supposed to work. The middle men are the largest beneficiaries – as things turned out with Ration and other schemes.

As Sharad Yadav puts, “The beneficiaries of the schemes hardly get any benefits because of the middlemen and rampant corruption. It is hunger and dignity that affect the poor the most in the country”

  • Increasing number of deaths on tracks…

The recent tragedy at Dharma Ghat has brought forth the long standing issue of deaths on the tracks. The tragedy, which killed 37 people (mostly women and kids), is currently marred in the blame game between the Railway Board, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP).

Apparently, people flocked Dharma Ghat because the day being last day of the holy month of Sawaan or Shrawan. The local train arrived at Dharma Ghat was over crowded due to this event, and the Railways were aware of the crowd turnout. The railway station does not have a Foot Over Bridge so the passengers are forced to cross the tracks.

As per their plans, all trains running that stretch were supposed to run max at the speed of 80KMph, however this was not informed to the driver. This would have helped to slow down the train in a timely manner and accident could have been averted. So clearly, the blame is on Railway Board.

  • The craze for wild life, travelling and science TV Channels

I am sure most of us have had faced this situation. At home, your dad / wife / mother / sister have all their time slots defined. At 8 it could be a serial at Colors, 8.30 at Zee, 9 at Star Plus and 10 at Life Ok (of course, for Mahadev). Do not go by the time I have mentioned, I never kept a track of these time slots anyway.

And in afternoons, there is repeat telecast of the shows and your wife / mother / sister missed because there were seeing other ones which clashed.

And I have to blame Ekta Kapoor here. She is the one who convinced Star to move Prime Time from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm with Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and the likes. You know, they caused a drastic change in the lifestyle of people, and their bio-clocks. (more…)

  • Places I want to see before I die…

Places or events I want to see before I die – this was something I was planning for so long, but was never able to sit and pen down. Many thoughts, many reasons for these places or events to be in list of must do things before my immortality comes to an end. If you go through my list, you may find that most of the places you have not heard, until now.

Well, I was in the same boat until I started reading an article-a-day on Wikipedia and often came across many places I have never heard. This was either through Featured articles, or random search. I am fascinated by these places or events simply by exclusivity of or rare nature.

There are many places in the world worth seeing once in your life time.

  • Aviation woes

    Aviation woes

Having followed two of country’s biggest aviation debacles of this decade, I have started accepting the fact that they may not last long. Of the two, Kingfisher is already in doldrums and I have already covered it many a times on my blog. And the other one is Air India.

Why Air India now? Because I was just imagining what if today’s Air India was not backed by Government? It will just exactly be another Kingfisher.

What is plaguing aviation sector in India today? Is it higher fuel costs or inefficiency? If it was the former, then how come IndiGo Airlines is in profits today after just 6 years into its operations and also be the market leader? Jet Airways had always ruled the roost in India and is on top during last two decades among Private airlines and to topple them, you need meat! And thats exactly what IndiGo did.

What makes the airline different? For starters, it only uses one type of Aircraft, the Airbus A320. This keeps its cost in check and second, has outsourced its aircraft maintenance operations to SriLankan Engineering, a subsidiary of SriLankan Airlines. This is due to excessive taxations imposed on local MRO providers. Then it sticks to its low cost model and really does not experiment out of its core operations or have a business class on its planes. Except for its IndiGo plus services which offer on board meal and predefined seating at a small fee. While keeping the costs low, it has a very strong emphasis on on-time performance which makes it really likable for a frequent traveller. And hardly comments have come my way about rude IndiGo staff or unsatisfactory services as compared to other airlines, including Jet.

What surprises me even more is the fact that Indigo is rapidly expanding its fleet at the same time and is currently adding a new A320 every 6 weeks!

Now think about this with Air India and Kingfisher, both Airlines currently in doldrums while former is walking on a blanket of tax payer’s money. Air India has both Airbus and Boeing Fleet for its operations and Kingfisher is operating Airbus and ATRs, with a Boeing 727 exclusively used for UB Group. The maintenance costs for multi-make aircrafts goes significantly up as the airline has to hire specialists for a type of air craft or invest in months of training for its engineers. Air India has multi-make Aircrafts for political reasons too. India has been promoting foreign investment in India by the manufacturer in exchange of confirm orders for Airbus or Boeing.

I am reiterating my earlier post about Air India and its treatment of employees, its Internal customers. And Kingfisher is just following suit. Strikes, delay in payments. I wish to see the aviation sector continue to grow. And I will read these very words back again.

  • Aviation: a century and a decade

Aviation: a century and a decade

What led me to write about it? I stumbled upon a wikipedia article on Concorde and had the time to read it through. The most interesting part is what I read afterwards. Over the coming weeks, I am planning to research a bit about these and compose them for all of us to read. I am sure this is going to be interesting for all of you here.

The Wright Brothers were the first ones to be able to commercially build an aircraft as we know today, but our history is star studded with aviators of folkfare. Leonardo DaVinci, Issac Newton and instances or references to those in Indian vedics who enabled Lord Rama and Ravan to fly across seas are just a few examples.

But that is not I am thinking right now. There are already many who have read and written about them. I am more amazed by the fact that having formally invented an aircraft for our industralized age in 1900’s from non existance, we still had pioneers who started thinking about Supersonics in early 1950’s. A Boeing 747 was planned nd the first model manufactured by late 1960’s and it still rules the roost. And dont even think that by 2025 an Airbus A380 will be grounded. And now what I read is by 2050, we will possibly see a hypersonic (breaching speeds of Mach 8) aircraft.

Can you imagine a world that has grown so fast. Consider space exploration for example where what was invented in 1970 is what we are using today. Or for that matter, this very medium. Internet. Being invented in 1990’s it has grown so fast.

Whats truly amazing about avaiation is that it has enable humas to fly, and travel at twice the speed of sound.

  • My Vacation to Kerala

I am set sail to my home town finally! Yay!

Its been 4 years since I have been to my home town and it was finally today that I could travel to the place where I spent my beautiful childhood. My home town, Alleppey in Kerala. Yes for most of you who do not know me yet and surprised to hear it being my home town, it indeed is my hometown. My dad was born and brought up there and so am I. Its common for fellow Malayalees to be surprised to hear me talk Gujurati, Kutchi and Malayalam at the same time. Its been happening me with ever since I first interacted in all these languages in their presense.

Or it maybe my surname that brings this thought about. And I am very much comfortable and used to it.

As I travel back to my childhood in my thoughts while travelling from Panvel to Alleppey in the Happa Express, there are so many of things that are coming my way. Truly, childhood and college are the best times of your life. And I am unfortunate not to live the later life as I had other responsibilites on my shoulder and opted for distance education.

I am eager to see how much my town has changed or if at all there are any changes from my last visit.

Looking forward to keep my blog posted with events from my visit on a daily basis.

  • SpiceJet becomes first to import fuel

SpiceJet becomes first to import fuel

It came to me as a surprise! It was SpiceJet and not Kingfisher that got the nod first to import Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) among all the airlines in India. This will enable Spicejet to substantially lower its operational costs which is an estimated saving of approximately 10 per cent.

Another surprise was that it will be the Reliance Industries Ltd which is likely to import jet fuel for SpiceJet, being the only private oil marketing company that has presence in many airports across the country.

I am wondering what happened to Kingfisher. Given its dire situation it is in today, it should have been an ideal candidate for the nod. Am sure there is some logic to this situation but unclear to me.

SpiceJet will run a pilot to evaluate the whole process to check its economic viability.

  • Kutch – my favorite place to be!

    Kutch (or Kachchh)

Kutch, by far is the largest district in India. Kutch literally means something which intermittently becomes wet and dry and it is called so because large area of Kutch is shallow wetland which submerges into water during rainy season, and is known as Rann of Kutch. The Rann is famous for the salt flats which become snow white after the rain water dries up.

In Kutch is also my ancestor’s village. Unfortunately, I visited this beautiful place for the first time after I was 22 years old. I never grew up here but this is a place I am so fond of and I never miss a visit at least once in a year if not twice. The villages in Kutch are really awesome to be in and stay over. Life is here is very much laid back unlike Mumbai where it is too fast and one strong reason why I love to spend my vacations there.

  • India's most innovative companies

When I saw this news, I was surprised at first and then when I read more about, I felt proud.

Two India’s youngest companies which made it big found their names into this prestigious list prepared by FastCompany. Redbus.in and Narayana Hrudayalaya.

“Narayana Hrudayalaya is Walmart meets Mother Teresa” is what FastCompany has to say about the hospital run by Doctor couple in India.

Read more in detail about Narayana Hrudayalaya on Fast Company’s website.

Organizing the scattered Bus travel industry in India takes Redbus.in to this list. A sorely missed alternative after success of IRCTC’s online railway reservation, Redbus.in managed to pull off what can be easily termed as a “mamoth’s task”.

Read more in detail about Redbus.in on Fast Company’s website.

Last year, another Indian company was featured by FastCompany was Shaadi.com. This is certainly a prospective proposition for other Indian comapnies to do things, differently.
