  • The Curious Case of Delhi

Delhi is being hailed by many as the experimental capital for politics. And I sort off agree.

AAP is poised to have a strong season this time around and may even be successful enough to grab their first majority in their three elections they fought. They are showing the way of fighting elections that majority of parties have not done so far. With their limited budget they have been able to turn things around unlike BJP which has unlimited budget so to speak.

They also have upgraded themselves, no more stupidity and appear to be much more like a political party. Their experience with contesting two elections reaping them great rewards it seems. And my guess is that this will catch up in other urban areas as well. On the face of it, I am not supporting either of parties but I love seeing the underdog winning at times. 🙂

  • Metro: It just got 'Mumbai'ed!

Mumbai saw the newest addition to its glory in the form of Mumbai Metro, and it made every mumbaikar happy. But the sudden announcement of the metro was left for open debate. The state needed to show some progress and are under pressure due to the upcoming assembly elections. Started  construction in 2006, it was completed in the end 2013 after a 2 year delay. It is an astonishing delay, when you consider that Dubai built man made Palm islands in 8 years! The delay was attributed to getting the requisite permissions from various authorities and public protests.

In the process, Mumbai also scrapped further expansion plans as they are not happy with the Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd., the contractor. MMOPL is co-owned by Reliance (ADAG) Group and Veolia Transport, and Reliance has got one up by branding the Mumbai Metro as Reliance Metro. (more…)

  • Windows Phone 8.1 Backgrounds

Well I know for those who are regular here (hardly, after I stopped posting regularly), I have been busy with tons and tons of work to complete. But in all this, one thing that kept me busy in this busy time of mine was the Windows Phone 8.1 Update. It has got tons of new features and in all probability should have been called Windows Phone 9! That is the huge upgrade.

One of the many things that I found myself really hooked onto was the transparent tiles. So I decided to design a few of my own backgrounds for my phone. You can find all the 60 I made at following link. (more…)

  • Financial Assistance Needed for a Friend's child

Update: Baby Dhrusti’s operation has been successful and she is recovering. Doctors have moved her out of ICCU and the hospital, and daily monitoring her progress. Great thanks to everyone who came forward and offered financial assistance. Special Thanks to my fellows at IndiBlogger forum who contributed financially and prayers.

    —————————————————————————————

A friend of mine (Hardik Nagda) is currently facing a crisis in his family with his daughter being diagnosed with Biliary Atresia with liver cirrhosis and is looking for Financial assistance to support the medical expenses.

Biliary atresia, also known as “extrahepatic ductopenia” and “progressive obliterative cholangiopathy” is a congenital or acquired disease of the liver and one of the principal forms of chronic rejection of a transplanted liver allograft. As a birth defect in newborn infants, it has an occurrence of 1/10,000 to 1/15,000 cases in live births in the United States. In the congenital form, the common bile duct between the liver and the small intestineis blocked or absent. The acquired type most often occurs in the setting of autoimmune disease, and is one of the principal forms of chronic rejection of a transplanted liver allograft. (Source: Wikipedia)

  • It is raining discounts in the Air

It is raining discounts in the Air

Spice Jet kicked it off, and everyone else followed the suit. Creating a stir with a 50% discount on base fares and fuel surcharges for tickets bought 30 days in advance, Spice Jet let the cat amongst the pigeons of air, which let to a cascading effect. Within hours, IndiGo and Go Air introduced similar fare discounts, so did Air India later in the day and by late night, Jet Airways did the same.

The best part was that this came without any warning and took everyone by surprise. I was anticipating a price-war when Air Asia would eventually launch, which is a given in any case. Tony Fernandes, the Air Asia CEO has already announced that his Indian operations would provide dramatically low fares which perhaps would be lower than the current prices being offered by low-cost carriers. I was thinking may be the airlines would like to cash in the money they can now and prepare for the bloodbath once Air Asia comes along.

But this move certainly surprised me. The discounted tickets are only available on carefully selected routes, and the entire inventory is not part of this. In all probability,  they only have 50% of their inventory open for these cheaper fares.

The fares from SpiceJet also do not come with a catch – oh yes, there is something that is free (or discounted in this case). These tickets are refundable with applicable cancellation fees. Which means, you can cancel the ticket and will be getting money in return upon cancellation. Now that is real bold move. In real world terms, this is a discount sale.

Apparently, the initiative is to ensure that they have enough load factor in the coming months which is a typical lean period for airlines. So if you have not planned, do it today – it is the last day.

  • A Place for Lovers & Couples in Mumbai – Part 2

A Place for Lovers & Couples in Mumbai – Part 2

The original post written way back in 2009, a place for lovers and couples in Mumbai had been one of my top visited and top commented post as well. Then came the JetPack 2013 Analytics Report which suggested that I should write more about topics that earned me most visits. Hence I am writing a place of lovers and couples in Mumbai part two. 🙂

Top post on IndiBlogger, the biggest community of Indian Bloggers

It is simple to understand why the subject of my post. It has earned me numerous hits over past four years. In Mumbai, there is less space for romance and more for everything else. You can openly spit, shit and piss on the streets without being caught by the Moral Police. But you can’t have a private moment of romance with your partner. Many of the people had paid a fine (bribe if you may) of more than INR 1000 for not getting into an indecent behavior, but just to stop things to reach the families.

  • Analytics: 2013 In Blogging – A Year that didn't change much

So JetPack sent me an email with a report that did impress me. It was good to see a different perspective of your blog using analytics. There were things that really did surprise me, which included the fact that all my blockbuster (if you can call them that) posts were published before 2013, and the best one was published in 2009. It has also recommended that I write on topics that have performed well in the past. Well, good advice I say. 🙂

Below is a snap shot of how Indianomics performed in the year 2013.

    Crunchy numbers

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 19,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 7 sold-out performances for that many people to see it. In 2013, there were 35 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 78 posts.

The busiest day of the year was October 2nd with 209 views. The most popular post that day was A Place for Lovers & Couples in Mumbai.

This report only shows data since you connected Jetpack.

    Mismatch

Some of the things mentioned here are a mismatch and the report still is not bug free though. For example, it said I added 35 new posts in 2013, totaling the archive of my blog to 78 posts – but in actuality, my blog has 287 Posts in all.

  • Why Vote and how should we inspire our youth to vote?

Why Vote and how should we inspire our youth to vote?

I have been very vocal about Voting Rights and India’s General Elections in 2014 – whether or not to vote is a choice and there is no way you should force voters to vote. But many do not vote because they do not feel so, and reasons could vary from long queues at polling booths to non-trustworthy candidate to a missing Election Card. I have not voted for anyone till date, and my reasons are the last two.

However, I would still go on and rant about bad roads and unhygienic places, to lack of tickets in a train to shady business going around. Many I spoke to would come back to me and say, well “when you never put your vote, you do not have rights to crib about things“. My response to them has been – “you did vote, that didn’t change much, right”?

Personally, it is important to me to have a very strong leader to look up to. In today’s world, we hardly are able to see one and if we see them, worry if the power would change them. The point is, we would want a leader who would run the constituency with as much honesty as possible.

“When you never put your vote, you do not have rights to crib about things”. My response to them has been – “You did vote, that didn’t change much, right”?

  • My New Year Wish List

So Amazon has this wonderful feature that other shopping sites (most that I used) did not have till now. Or so I think. The reason why I have a Wish List on Amazon is because I know they have it and my shopping experience with Amazon has been better than Flipkart (recently).

Being a person with love for Website Designs, I used to browse through many designs and landed up on some of them which had a Gift List – in US, you can have a Wedding / Birthday website created with a wish list which people can send as gifts. They know what you need, and that way will not give you things you won’t need. Simple. 🙂

In India, this is not a tradition yet. Especially with Indians being so vary about online shopping (things are changing though) it is even more difficult. One of the strong reasons Indian online shopping stores have not brought in this culture. Wedding websites are still a not made for more than 5% of the wedding (I had mine done, though) and integrating such a list is not being thought upon. And with a trend of requesting a “No-Gifts” wedding, this does not even make sense.

Well, not any more with my Amazon Wish List, or so I think. So any of you who think of gifting me anything this New Year and Holiday season, you know what I want.

Go to Amazon and send me a gift and be my Santa… Ho ho!

  • Sudden buzz in Aviation Industry

    Sudden buzz in Aviation Industry

I was planning for a week-long trip this November, and my plans started falling apart after I saw the airline ticket prices going up rapidly. The day (23rd Sept) I checked the fares, return tickets for two adults from BOM (Mumbai) to IXB (Bagdogara) via DEL (Delhi) travelling in November on  Air India (1 stop with the lowest layover time) costed Rs. 19,601. The fare for the same flight went up to Rs. 22,408  the very next day. On 3rd day, the fare again changed to Rs. 24,402. Today, the same flight tickets would cost me Rs.36,282.

Woot! That’s a rock solid increase of Rs. 16,681 in ticket fare in just 4 days for a flight trip planned almost 2 months in advance. I had to wait for my salary to come to book trip tickets for this huge amount, and it now does not make any sense. As you might assume, I backed off from booking the ticket. (more…)

  • All new Chrome tab with Google Search integrated, and how it benefits Google?

Google released an all new version of Chrome which includes major changes on the tab design and interface for Chrome Apps. The new change also brings Google Doodles for that country (google.co.in doodle for India) to tab and you do not have to open the site to see.

With Ominibar, a lot of people (like me) missed the Doodle since they hardly access the search engine’s home page. This may be a good way to force them to see the Google Doodle. At the same time, I know people who do not use Ominibar for search. For them, a visit to Google.com or Google.co.in is a must. (more…)

  • Finally, the inflation has hit devotees

As strange as it may sound, but it is true. And yes, welcome too.

We have always heard this many times over, and in the movie Oh My God, where Paresh Rawal mouths the dialogue – “Inke yaha recession main bhi income kam nahi hoti, balki badh thi hai kyu ki log daar ke maare aur jhanjat se bahar nikalne ke liye aur zyada daan denge” (For these people, income never dips even during recession but only increases as people get afraid and donate more to get out of financial difficulties).

On the first page of today’s Hindustan Times news paper is where I found the very title of this post. It was reported that there was a slight dip in this year’s income at city’s most famous mandal, Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, who hosts Lord Ganesha for 10 days during the festival. • Air India gains a bit of its lost market share

Air India is improving its performance, thanks to a tighter control on its bad practices, which is a good news. Although it has the 4th largest Market Share in India out of 6 Airlines is never a biggie, the best part is that it has started making profits in certain sectors. Profit or not, I strongly believe that Air India should be able to compete on par with all Private and International Players on almost every aspect, and not only Price.

I am tracking Air India’s progress on my blog as it is and will be my favorite airline for reasons unbeknownst to myself.

Below is the chart with Market Share of all Domestic Scheduled Airlines in India (except Air Mantra). (more…)
