  • Fuel Prices and its illeffects

Everyone is up in arms with the back to back hike in fuel prices. To be precise, the Petrol prices.

India is among large importers of crude oil and price of which is so volatile. All Oil PSUs in India are running into losses because of the various subsidies given by the government for all petroleum products. In a way, India is trying to liberalize its economy. The subsidy is basically nothing but the Taxes we pay which comes back as a ‘fake’ relief to us.

Ideally, removal of the subsidy should help government in many ways. One of them, it should end up saving subsidy money which can be diverted to Infrastructure development (and not govt. officials’s pockets). If the funds are properly channelized, I think we can still keep growing as a country in terms of economy and people.

How it is linked to Inflation?

It sounds simple but it is not, trust me. Food products’ prices are the first to go up the moment there is a hike in petrol prices. Reason often cited is the rise in Petrol prices increases transportation costs. One should remember that Government has only raised the prices of petrol and not diesel on which all trucks run and in that sense, it should not affect the food prices at all. It is the middle men who are cashing on the petrol hike opportunity to steal. Manipulating the situation, they make the hay when the Petrol price rise sun is shining.

They bloat up the prices of essential commodities which earn them good money and dupe all of us. Those who are employed do not get a hike in their annual pay on monthly basis and this makes it even tougher for upper and lower middle class. So, what do we say about people who live below poverty line or on it?

Today, for a family of four, a day’s meal can cost anywhere from 150 to 600 depending upon various purchases they do. Fruits costing almost double in last 3 years. And government comes out with a report that an average Indian needs only Rs. 32 a day to eat and live peacefully.

    Beware of hikes and reductions!

Every time we see a hike, we start fearing see our food bill going up. Cutting down on other spending is often seen as a way to counter the hike in our food expenses. One thing we should all force and apply is when fuel prices reduce, these bloated up prices should come down too.

A liter of milk now costs more than Rs. 30 and can range from Rs. 22 for a low grade (read more water adulterated milk and vice versa) to even Rs. 35 for the higher grade in certain areas. Cost shouldn’t keep spiraling upwards every time the fuel hike is affected. There should be effective controls placed on essentials commodities.

As an aside, ration supply in India is dogged with serious quality issues. The owners of these ration shops often buy adulterated and low quality commodities from open market and sell it in place of good quality commodities they receive from Government’s Food Corporation of India. The good quality commodity is sold at premium in open market. In the process they steal our right and money. No wonder in India, many do not even pay taxes.

I have heard one of my colleagues from Netherlands once saying that they are happy to pay taxes because their government is giving them enough in returns. Ample and quality infrastructure, good life style opportunities, more people friendly initiatives etc.

So getting back to the topic, any hike and reduction should correctly reflect in our day to day budget.

  • Advantages of using Analytics for blogs and websites

Advantage No.1: Statistics: It tells you how much your blog is visited and from where. This is in particular useful to guage two things. One the amount of revenue your site can get, two to see viability of the website. By viability, I mean, to see how much are you getting in return for your investment (here time) which helps you to prioritize your activites on the website.

No.2: Targetting: Analytics helps you to esitmate your efforts in one goal your have set for yourself. It may be your reach in a particular region (geographicaly or by subject) or your returns from a region. It tells you what you have achieved for that period.

No.3: Search & Keywords preformance: It helps us to learn how our keywords are performing on search and how search is helping you reach to your end user. You can find out the keywords that are relevant and start using them more often knowing that you are getting good hits via those keywords. Also, it helps us analyze which keywords are not performing optimal to your expectations and work towards it.

No.4: Platform, Connectivity: For most bloggers, it wont make a big impact but other wise for a website it does. For example, if you want to check what % of users use Flash on their browsers. This helps you decide whether you want to create a flash based intro or a flash based application for creating a dynamic application. The same stands true for Operating systems, but it is not that important these days as most advance browsers behave almost same in terms of delivering your content. However, your Operating systes are important to know when you want to check Mobile OS. Which helps you to categorize and calculate your visitors from Mobile Browsers. Opera on PC/Mac can be confused with Opera on mobile and hence this parameter helps.

Also, it helps in deciding your target audience. For example, lets take the latest technology on web is HTML5 with Javascript. If you wanna start redesigning your website on HTML5, you might as well check what your users are using. If 90% of your users are using th latest browsers, it makes sense to go ahead. If lesss than 10% of your visitors are usign latest browsers, it wont help as others wont be able to use the website functionality you intend to develop.

Knowing Connectivity is important as well, to gauge what size of webpage your users will be able to download fast. If you have more thna 50% of users on dailup with 28KBPS speed, it wont help having a website that is heavily loaded with graphics.

All in all, analytics is used to target your website to a sect of users with importance to multiple aspects and you working towards achieving your targets.

  • Organize your "to do's" so you can get to your "I do's"

Think of Google as your one stop shop for almost everything. Well, almost… While there are so many tools we use today, there is little in the way we think that Google does. No one thinks what Google does. Lets learn to think out of the box.

    Enter the Google.com/Wedding portal

    Screen Grab of Google Wedding
    Screen Grab of Google Wedding

With the help of multiple Google products, it’s a platform that helps you organize your wedding needs and share it with your circle (read Google+) of friends. With a range of online applications like Google Sites, Picnik, Google Docs, Picasa Web Albums, you can create your wedding website and share it with your friends.

Share your wedding story on Google by easily creating a website. With readymade templates available, all you have to do is edit / add your story and viola, it’s all set up. Since Google is a platform for sharing, many web designers share their templates over this shared, open source platform.

Plan your nut and bolts to Start your Engine…

Your Google site (website) will not be complete without beautiful and artistic pictures and millions of poses of the lucky couple. Enter Google Picnik, which helps you do just that. Create your wedding invite, announcements et al in graphical and artistic way. Beats the charges you pay a web designer (unlucky me :P) as everything is for FREE! And no one stops you from being creative your way… (not even me 😛 :P)

You will need a spread sheet to list down your expenses, addresses and email ids for invites, Guest hotel bookings, schedules for Bridal make up / Tuxedo or Safari suit delivery, to do list, reception menu, and everything else in between using Google Docs. With customized tools like Wedding Planner, Address Book, Guest List, Budget Planner, To – Do list, Seating Chart (not really used in India), Music List, Reception Menu, you get a everything you looking for in your marriage to be as flaw less as possible.

    Share Happiness…

Share your happiness by uploading pictures of your wedding, editing it in Picnik and then later, uploading the same to your Picasa Web Albums.

    Learning…

What does this level of collaboration teach us? Within our work area, there are so many things that we can mash up together for increased productivity. Access to these tools is important and so is flaw less connectivity. Imagine things to create, visualize things to develop and even we can think out of the box!

  • Politics wants to rename Dadar Station

Funnily enough, the NCP and Congress in their efforts to woo the Dalit votebank have time and again, used Dr. Ambedkar’s name. Silly, I fail to understand why is it even needed! If Dr. Ambedkar was with us today, he would have certainly objected the vote bank politics.

Why in the world they want to keep renaming everything that is famous? I say, lets start with renaming their names. They are famous too, are not they? Since they are famous as well, we should all force all political leaders to change their names so that we can give our forefathers some credit.

  • Using which Keywords people reach my blog?

    Hey folks,

I found very interesting information via Google Analytics. For one, I am surprised that this blog is being searched on Google for Lovers place in Mumbai and less of others. 😛

Very funny it may sound, but the top searched post on my blog is A Place for Lovers in Mumbai. The following Statistics of Top Keywords that were searched and landed on my blog.

    1.places for couples in mumbai

  • Left over pages turn into 1.5 lakh books!

Costly Reality: A Full-scale book in Mumbai costs anywhere between Rs. 15 to Rs. 70 depending over the quality/brand etc.

Something that began as an Award winning Idea from an inter college contest will now end up benefiting more than 15,000 underprivileged children. Its my esitmate considering a child is given atleast 10 books and not as the news paper said which was 1,50,000 students for 1,50,000 books. Around 2,500 students from various colleges have made over 1, 50,000 notebooks by using the leftover pages from books collected as part of the eco binding project.

Mumbai University now will be distributing them to underprivileged students in Maharashtra, for Free!
(Source Idea: DNA Newspaper, Daily, June 4, 2011, front page, bottom | Edited to breif)

I wanted to blog about this. Why not? Not because I want to blog about what I find in news papers, but this is a good deed. If we can all start a movement like this in many cities, I think we will be hitting a double whammy.

By doing this, we can start a culture of better utilization of paper and there by, saving more trees from being cut down.

Second, it will be greatfully helpful for the underprivileged and give them an opportunity to learn and be less bothered about the cost of education. Even though the Government Schools provide education with very very low to no fees at all, underprivileged families have to spend on the note books, text books etc. This may help them at least save little money and less worry about this cost.

If any one is interested in collaborating, please do let me know.

  • Street Lights at mid-noon! Why?

These pictures tell you the carelessness towards the saving of Electricity that we pay for, as part of our taxes every month. Why are using CFLs at our home to save energy when the BMC / Reliance Energy or the concerned authorities can waste it just like this? Yes, we do use CFLs because it saves us money. But why cant the government or government appointed agencies not save money too? After all, its coming from our pockets. Tax Payers.

    Street Light and its misuse
    Street Light and its misuse

This has to be dealt with very very seriously. I tried calling the Reliance Energy Calling via your customer care took ages as it asked for a customer a/c number which i don’t have as I don’t stay in the area where they provide power services. Finally, I sent a mail to their email address (energy.helpdesk @ relianceada.com). Will wait now to hear from them. The Request number that I was provided by a return mail is: DWML11091353

In the evening when I left from office at 8.30, surprisingly the Street lights were off!! This certainly was absurd to know that the whole day when sun was glowing hot, the street lights were full and working. But at night, when they are actually required to work, they were switched off!

    Update: 09 May 2011

I am yet to get reply from them, however today too I saw the same wastage of energy. I will be observing this stretch of the road for some days to come and will keep updating this post.

    Update: 11 May 2011

They did reply today but the request number is different from what I received in the first mail. May be the request number changed when I sent three mails in all. I don’t mind it as long as action is taken.

    Reply from Reliance Energy:

    Sub: {DSTL11000313} [REPLY2] Response to your e-mail dated 06/05/2011.

    Dear Customer,

    Warm Greetings from Reliance Energy!

Further necessary contact on the matter would be made by the respective authorities, as required.

I hope the action is taken soon enough.

  • Create a 2D barcode for your Blog address or your website or even your Facebook page

Ever wondered how do you make your website address simpler for people to remember? Bookmarks and Visiting Cards are a thing of past. URL Shortners are sure active. There were other technologies that were developed but went hiding. The .tel domain TLD for example, was supposed to only store your vCard and Telephonic Information and domain names are very costly. But we now have a technology that will last at least for more han a decade before we have something new coming up. For lazy people like me who think twice before typing out an URL on my mobile phone, this certainly comes handy 😛

    2D Bar codes

With the advent of Mobile Internet Technology, we are moving on to the next level of sharing our contacts. 2D Bar codes are already being used in Retail stores and on products, but with Barcode scanners / readers available on mobile phones now, it has become simpler for every one to use it. The first advertisement on Paper was that I saw using the 2D Barcode was that of Tata Manza.

After I saw that, I really made me go to the url they gave, download the custom Barcode reader and after scanning the Bar code printed on the Advert, it downloaded the Video Advertisement. If they had to give, they could have easily made a bit.ly url or used any other URL Shortening service. But what it made me do was to explore this new phenomenon.

I believe this will help you create a new avenue till this technology is just nascent. There are many free tools available online that help create a Bar code for your URL, VCF card, on your physical Visiting Cards etc. or for that matter, sending a secret message to your Girlfriend 😉

2D Barcodes, as they are popularly called, can store various type of information. But they themselves come in different types and QR (Quick Response) Code, as of now, the popular one. Others include: Aztec Code, Data Matrix etc. The future as many believe is in the High Capacity Color Barcode, however its still some years before it comes alive.

How to create your own barcode?

Best way to start off is to use Nokia’s website for creation of a Bar code (link). Thats how I started using it. 🙂

  • State honors for Satya Sai Baba?

I don’t understand the reason for State honors for Satya Sai Baba. He is neither a Military man, not a government office bearer that he gets this privilege. More over, I think no one in politics should never get that. But that’s a different story. With all due respect to his holiness, I dont think there was any god living in this time of the world. But people used refer him to god. I never heard of a God who lived in a Rs.  50,000 Crore empire, travelling in Rolls Royce. I dont even think Sai Baba (Shirdi Sai Baba), whom Satya Sai Baba claims to be as his reincarnation, would have spent a life as stylish.

No offence to so many people following him, and I respect their rights of freedom of thinking. But I need answers to my questions.

I read on some news sites, that State honors for Satya Sai Baba as it is followed for every other Hindu spiritual leaders! Is that correct? If Hindu Spiritual leaders on their death get State honors, then there a so many spiritual leaders, why didnt they get? Does being famous make him eligible to get state honors? Really looking for answers, if some one has please do let me know.

I wish to write more about this topic of Satya Sai Baba. I hope I find enough time.

In 2008, I shifted to WordPress and from Blogger and I was floored with WP’s blogging powers. During this journey, there were so many people who helped me grow as a blogger. I thank all of them sincerely for being great supporters and critics alike. Thank you very much. 🙂

Here is a list of must read blog posts.

Life is Cool – A sweet poem inspired by the Rainbow I saw while traveling on the Mumbai Suburban Railways

Akshaya Patra and generous deed – “Akshaya Patra” means an inexhaustible vessel. My article for Akshaya Patra IndiBlogger contest. It was written for the sheer thought that every blog post will earn 50 children a Meal

The Seconds Effect! Will Tata DoCoMo change market Dynamics – Tata Docomo had launched in 5 circles already and was readying its offerings for other cities as well. I had written this article about Tata Docomo because this enterant was sure to shake up things in what was then a some-what stable market. This post is also special because Tata Docomo Marketing team themselves landed up on my post to comment and reply to those who complained.

ChangeMind Ver 1.0 – No more caste differences – Its one crazy idea of inventing a technology to change the mindset of people with Cast Differences. Though this is purely fictional and a complete non-brainer, I have tried to tell you all what I feel about how does this caste differences work so badly for people who are in love.

Airtel Ad: Timeless Goodbye – The new Airtel ad where they launch their 3G services is reviewed. Created by JWT, this ad triumphed Tata Docomo’s 3G (though sober and cute) advert by miles. Docomo was the first to launch 3G. It touched emotional chord with its users, particularly those unmarried love couples.

What is your favorite topping for a Pizza? – I have this tendency to write about complete non-brainers you see :P. Here I have shared my favorite Pizza Toppings 🙂 and others did theirs too 😀

Sugar Cane Juice – the old way – I came across a completely wooden Sugar Cane machine, crushed using the power of hands. Never tasted Sugar Cane juice as sweetest as this 😀

The Sahyadris – Some pictures IThe Sahyadris – Some pictures II – I had been to a short trip down to Goa via Konkan and these are the snaps that I took early morning from the train. I was completely mystified with the beauty of nature. Its awesome to say the least. Am sure there are much more beautiful places on earth, but for me this trip will remain memorable.

The Chinese Noodle with Japanese Sauce and Thai Phuket Phad Ka Corw – My first time having Thai food. Details of what we ordered and how much i liked having Thai…

A Place for Lovers in Mumbai – After lunch, I was talking to my friends outside our office. A topic we discussed was Lover’s place in Mumbai. Suddenly pictures of Bandra Bandstand, Borivali National Park (Kanheri Caves), Juhu Beach and Airol Garden were flashing in minds of each one of us. Its hard still to find a place for couples in Mumbai?

Women and their addiction to men’s height! – Once I was having a lighter discussion with my mom when she revealed that she would have preffered a taller man to a same heighted or slightly tall. My dad is taller, but not much. This forced me to think, and then write, about  why women have this addiction to men’s height

Air India and its never ending woes – The official carrier of India fondly called as ‘Maharaja’ is in financial doldrums. Air India has everything it possibly can, except for productivity. I tried to suggest a few things on how we can bring about a change in the fortunes of Air India. This post was chosen for Tangy Tuesday’s at Blog Adda

Evening @ Summer Funk – Shaimak Davar’s Dance academy conducts its Annual show for parents and children alike. This evening was really special coz I saw Deaf people dancing!! • Google Maps not showing J&K and Arunachal as part of India

I was appalled when I saw that Google Maps stopped showing Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and Arunachal Pradesh as part of India. I was browsing through my Google Analytics hit counts from countries when I noticed this. I wonder why Google omitted when they are already part of India since Independence?

    The J&K Dispute

A bit of history then, shall we? Before accession to India, Princely State of Kashmir and Jammu was ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh. Even though he had a Muslim majority population, he wanted to keep the state of Kashmir and Jammu independent and maintain status quo with both nations. Pakistan accepted the status quo, but not by India.

Pakistan then used infiltration to entice a rebellion in Kashmir, primarily with Mehsuds and Afridis from Northwest Frontier. It caused a panic for the princely state that Raja did not seem to have an option to remain independent. Raja requested Indian Army to help when Governor General Lord Mountbatten adviced Maharaja to join the Dominion of India. Irked by State of Kashmir and Jammu’s accession to India, Pakistan intensified their infiltration and fought a war (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-Pakistani_wars_and_conflicts#Indo-Pakistani_War_of_1947) with Indian Army.

The UN got involved and passed the Resolution 47 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Council_Resolution_47), which stated the steps to resolve the conflict is by conducting a plebiscite. If not for Pakistan triggering the war, J&K would have been an independent state/country.

The J&K Ommission from Google Maps

Jammu and Kashmir and the state of Arunachal Pradesh are not shown as part of either Pakistan or China as well. Tagged as disputed territories in Google’s International Maps site. Should Google not respect International Borders released by United Nations? One can understand Jammu & Kashmir to be tagged as disputed but still only north of LOC (P.O.K.) should have been shown as argued. Arunachal Pradesh is an official state of India, and is governed by the Government of India and dispensing Arunachal Pradesh under dispute is not something we Indians can digest.

Google Analytics MAP not showing Jammu & Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh
Google Analytics MAP not showing Jammu & Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh

Furthermore, I checked with three different Google Maps to find out how it shows on the Google Maps. And this what it turned out to be. Last time it was red flagged for this, Google had assured the discrepancy would be set right, akin to the earlier data.

Last year August (2010), Minister of State for Telecom and IT Sachin Pilot said that Government had sent a notice to Google for showing P.O.K. as part of Pakistan. “Any wrongful depiction of Indian map and its boundaries is liable for action under the India Information Technology Act. Google has been asked to correct this inaccuracy immediately”. After the notification, Google had still found a way to please China, Pakistan, and India by amending local versions of Google Maps for respective countries.

Google MAPS International (maps.google.com) shows both J&K and Arunachal as disputed territories
Google MAPS International (maps.google.com) shows both J&K and Arunachal as disputed territories
Google MAPS China (ditu.google.cn) shows J&K as a part of Pakistan with dashed borders denoting the Dispute and Arunachal as China's territory
Google MAPS China (ditu.google.cn) shows J&K as a part of Pakistan with dashed borders denoting the Dispute and Arunachal as China’s territory Google MAPS China (ditu.google.cn) shows J&K as a part of Pakistan with dashed borders denoting the Dispute and Arunachal as China’s territory
Google MAPS India (maps.google.co.in) shows J&K and Arunachal as India's territory
Google MAPS India (maps.google.co.in) shows J&K and Arunachal as India’s territory

After an interesting string of questions fired towards Google, here is the reply from Google.

It is Google’s standard practice to show all disputed regions around the world on its global properties, such as on maps.google.com. It has been Google’s consistent and global policy to depict disputed regions as per the claims made by the disputing/claiming nations on its global properties. This does not in any way endorse or affirm the position taken by any side but merely provides complete information on the prevailing geo-political situation to our users of global properties dispassionately and accurately. Products that have been localized to the local domain of a region such as maps.google.co.in may depict that country’s position as per the mandate of their local laws.

This was replied by a Google Employee on the Google Maps Support forum. Agreed that Google Maps Local versions have been tweaked to accede to the Law of the Land, but then that too should be implied throughout all of its products.

From a Business perspective, Google Analytics not showing data for Jammu & Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh, (the company I work for have a few Business Associates located in these regions) I need information of how many hits I am getting from these regions.

What about other map service providers?

Yahoo! too has this same distinction when it comes to their Local Versions. Yahoo! Maps for India shows P.O.K. as part of India, but International version shows it as part of Pakistan.

Yahoo! Maps International showing P.O.K. as part of Pakistan
Yahoo! Maps International showing P.O.K. as part of Pakistan

Yahoo! has not resorted to showing P.O.K. or Arunachal Pradesh as a disputed territory but instead, for its International version it has demonstrated that P.O.K. as part of Pakistan. Anyone who is not informed about the dispute considers P.O.K. as Part of Kashmir.

    How Stock Market Works!

Just dont find enuf mind to post something, so thought I will share something that came by an Email today.

The Stock Market simply illustrated … is there a lesson here?

    The Stock Market
    The Stock Market

Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for Rs10.

The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them.

The man bought thousands at Rs10 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort. He further announced that he would now buy at Rs20.

This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again. Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer rate increased to Rs25 and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey let alone catch it.

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at Rs50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him. In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers. “Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at Rs35 and when the man returns from the city , you can sell it to him for Rs50.”

The villagers squeezed up with all their savings to buy the monkeys. Then they never saw the man nor his assistant, only monkeys everywhere!!!!
