  • I went on a Break. Here’s what happened (Besides me forgetting my blog password)

I went on a Break. Here’s what happened (Besides me forgetting my blog password)

Let’s be honest. If you’ve come back to Indianomics wondering where I vanished for the last year and a half… well, same. I’ve been trying to figure that out too.

Turns out, the answer isn’t some grand escape to the mountains or a digital detox on a beach with zero bars of reception. It’s just… life. The kind of life that quietly sneaks up on you with new routines, unexpected challenges, and the occasional existential crisis over which OTT subscription to cancel this month.

The “Break” That Turned Into a Plot Twist

I didn’t intend to ghost my own blog. I love writing. But somewhere between juggling EMIs, explaining to my daughter why the iPad doesn’t need another screen protector, and driving 1,000+ km road trips for “fun,” the blog slipped into a coma. Not dead, just… sleeping.

So here’s a quick recap of what I’ve really been up to:

    Long Drives, Longer Thoughts

If you know me, you know I don’t just drive. I cruise into contemplation. From Mumbai to Alappuzha (yes, twice), Goa, Udaipur, and more — my Tata Tigor and I have clocked serious miles, usually while blasting music at midnight and sipping coffee like it’s rocket fuel.

The roads have been many. The repairs? Also many. Suspension issues, AMT jerks, fog lamps that ghosted me after servicing — my car’s become part vehicle, part personality. Honestly, it needs its own Instagram account.

    Life: The Full Subscription Package

Netflix. Prime. Disney+. YouTube Premium. Apple One. JioCinema. And then there’s the real MVP: Tata Play Fiber. Because what’s a modern household without 18 overlapping content platforms and a broadband speed that still gives you buffering at the worst moment?

Also, I now pay for domain names I can’t remember buying. Maybe I was sleep-registering.

    CFO of My Own Household

While I say I donned the hat of being the CFO, you very well know who is the Minister in-charge. 🙂

In between work calls, I’ve been mastering the art of budgeting. SIPs, RDs, health insurance for the whole clan, 3 different iPhone EMIs (don’t ask), and a monthly expense sheet that looks more complicated than an Accenture org chart.

Bonus round: figuring out which of my 9 credit cards actually gives points for insurance payments. (Spoiler: barely any do.)

Work Life: Ctrl + Alt + Everything

Work has been… full throttle. From leading teams and pitching ideas that could (and should) win awards, to playing sounding board, strategist, and manager to some incredibly talented folks, I’ve been in the thick of it.

Did I mention I also built financial plans, designed feedback loops, and casually dropped performance reviews that could double up as motivational posters? Yeah. That happened.

    Reality Check, Courtesy My Daughter

The other evening, during one of our casual post-dinner conversations, my daughter turned to me and asked with the most innocent expression, “Pappa, what happened to your blog? Did it die or something?”

Just like that. No filter. No warm-up. Straight to the gut. Now I’ve handled some tough feedback in life. Clients, managers, service center folks who think my fog lamps are optional. But this one hit different. Not because it was rude, but because it was so… accurate.

She wasn’t being cheeky. She was genuinely curious, and maybe a little surprised that something I once talked about with pride had just quietly vanished. So here I am. Dusting off my thoughts, stretching my fingers, and writing this post.

Because if there’s one thing more powerful than deadlines or self-motivation, it’s your child calling out your long silence with brutal honesty and full emotional clarity. No disclaimers. No delays.

Turns out, that’s all the motivation I needed.

    What’s Next?

I don’t know if I’ll write every week. I’m not going to commit to a #100DaysOfBlogging challenge. But I do want to reconnect. To share more. Maybe write about the changing face of money, cars, parenting, tech, or just that one time the Tata service center returned my car with a dangling wire and a non-functioning A/C heater.

So here’s to restarting. Not with a bang, but with a blog post.

    Thanks for sticking around.

  • The pain of an Indian citizen

The pain of an Indian citizen

A whatsapp response to good friend Akhil turned in to a poem.

I live in Mumbai – Thane – Kalyan belt, and pay my taxes here. But I don’t get even the basic of the service like good roads, clean public sanitation, cleaner air to breathe. But for those who are blinded in their faith towards one party, I want to offer them a piece of advice. Vote for those who work for your constituency, not for the PM candidate.

    The Pain of an Indian

I should be bothered about the poverty in Bihar and UP which pay almost similar tax that Mumbai alone pays in a year. That is a far cry. However I need to carry the weight (pay taxes) for their development.

    For nation building, then…

The people in UP slaughter people in the name of the cow, which isn’t the national animal. Tiger is, and it doesn’t get the same support.

I will suffer and pay my taxes, for the nation building then…

LPG gas subsidy bill was reduced but the poor in Mumbai still pay ₹800~ while someone in remote area gets it for free. Well, one bit for betterment.

While I suffer, for the nation building then..

The constant rant of unifying Hindus, building temples by destroying mosques, spreading the hatered among friends and family, like playing the classic vamp in an Ekta Kapoor series

But for the nation building then…

Cost of fuel touched all time high, but I will suffer because government is reducing the fiscal deficit. For that dream, one that wasn’t achieved, I shattered, I will pay, for nation building then…

Demonetization killed the small economy. Thousands lost job. I was on of them, too.

But heck, I will suffer for, nation building then…

I still drive through Rickety roads to and from office, it breaks my back, but I should applaud the government for building new roads outside of Mumbai-Thane region.

I will suffer, for the nation building then…

Taking political pot shots at opposition for a terror attack when you are in power, because you could not stop it and don’t want to take the blame.

I ignore, for nation building then…

No one can ask question to the government, because I need to trust them, else I will be called an anti-national.

So I stay silent, for the nation building then…

Not a single case of corruption, am told, has emerged for they have been buried in the bushes of the media glore..

I stay silent, for the nation building then..

Friends turn foes and bosses become evil, because the one who is a bhakt cannot stand critical thinking.

I stay silent, for the nation building then..

My PM spends tax payer money to travel and do election oriented rallies, but heck who am I to question it! He is building a nation that never existed he thinks, while I keep paying my taxes without taking the much needed holiday.

I suffer, but will pay for nation building then…

I can’t respect my rights as an Indian citizen, so I submit for the nation building then…

But then you questioned the current capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces, by saying “imagine if we had Rafael, the result would have been different”.

You proved that you couldn’t care any less.

But then when school kids asked your opinion on climate change, and your response was “climate change kuch nahi humari sehen shakti kam hogai hai”.

    You proved you aren’t intellectual.

But then when the country asked to validate taller claims, you shoved fictional figures.

You proved you aren’t scared of the citizen.

But then you fudged the accounting calculator to show higher GDP growth figure and never allowed reverse calcultion comparison with UPA performance.

You proved that you aren’t true to yourself.

And today, there you are with millions of blind fans of yours, again at our door step asking for a favor that is the right of same citizens you dint care about, of the constitution that you ignored, of the lives that you played with in the last five years…

For the sake of a Hindurashtra in the disguise of Nation building… Do you think I will want to suffer?

  • Go electric, via solar. Harvest the sun!

Go electric, via solar. Harvest the sun!

Elon Musk is making all the right noises, and for the right reasons. He first went electric with his Tesla, and now is building a Solar City that will harvest solar energy. A perfect brand ambassador for the title of this article, Go electric, via Solar. However, it is a sham to think humans are difficult to convince.

Countries generate a significant chunk of their electricity from burning fossil fuels. The need is vital, given the consumption levels and lack of alternatives. But the need to burn fossil fuel was not!

Put the space available to some good use, shall we?

(This article is an extension of my post on  Pollution: What the hell are we breathing?)

Why are we behind on Solar?

    Profiteering Industry causes disruptions.

Think of it this way. You are hungry, but the store near you only wants to sell you oranges, as he has got a lot of it. He goes to the government, lobbies (possibly bribes) and convinces the government to provide benefits for selling oranges.

Due to this, the country does not encourage apple farmers for example, and focuses on oranges, thereby ignoring farmers ability to increment apple’s growing and production techniques. Since apple production is less in numbers, they cost significantly more and are not easily accessible. To amplify this, you are also discouraged from buying apples with a lot of negative publicity around it.

If you got the drift, well done. You can use this as a base to understand how Trump won the elections. If not, read on.

I will use the example of cars here to make it easy for you. Companies and people who had invested heavily in fossil fuel and related businesses (car and oil producing companies primarily) pushed the government to ignore the idea of electric vehicles, so people continue to use petrol (gasoline). It would help them not make a new investment in technology for alternative fuel or electricity-powered cars, thus also ensuring their current business remain successful.

Every major industry follows this approach to remain in business by not innovating. As usual, the herd mentality. In fact, those who challenged this de facto malpractice, are silenced in a way or another.

    Challengers grew!

These manufactures for the sake of their profit and existence put the future of earth at risk. Today we are all used to a way of life, designed by the very people who were only profiteering.

But keeping a sound idea suppressed for long is difficult. And likes of Elon Musk rise to the occasion. In this specific example, car manufacturers themselves sensed their future at risk and started investing in either the alternative fuel or electric cars. A small victory right there, but the cost is still prohibitive.

Electricity costs a lot of carbons

The cost I am talking about is not only financial but to the environment all the same. Government or private girds produce electricity from many forms. The hydro-dam, the solar, windmill, and nuclear reactor based electricity generation do not cause environmental pollution. They only have a small share in the entire production span across many countries.

Hence it does not make any sense to use an electrically powered car when burning fossil fuels generate the electricity. We need to go Solar.

    Why solar?

I do not think anyone asked this question – except to douse their curiosity. Of course, you need ample amount of sunlight. Of course, you need a lot of space to plan these giant solar panels. But this is the cleanest form of energy.

Here is an excellent example of how a place consuming more than 18,000 Units a day saved all of them, thanks to Solar. Cochin Airport is world’s first and only fully solar powered airport.

Solar energy is still costly for an average homemaker to buy, however larger institutions can afford it. Cochin Airport is a perfect example of this greater good.

    Sixth element: Electricity

Going forward, the world’s reliance on electricity will only increment and hence, it will remain one of the most sought after ‘element’. The reason I call it so is because, we already have polluted our earth, water, and air – the three most fundamental needs for human life to exist on earth.

I will write more about electricity as sixth element in a more detailed article.

    Innovation in Solar Energy Harvesting

Innovation in solar has got a boost in the last decade. However, we have only seen a dramatic increase in installations in the previous two years. Climate change or not, the weather conditions have made a lot of organizations and governments take the right step into the future. I want to talk about a few of the innovations that will help the planet earth greatly.

    Thin Film Solar

Most of us remember Solar panels as gigantic, like in the featured picture on this article. However, the innovations in this field have to lead us to thinner films that help make manufacturing and installing a solar panel cheaper, more accessible and practical. Thinner solar films can be pasted onto the roof and walls (not as much efficient) to generate electricity. Absorbing the sunlight means, less heat gets passed on to the roof at the same time, thus making the roofs cooler (and saving cooling costs). To be commercially launched, but future is already looking bright.

    Solar Windows

Another innovation that has great potential is Solar Windows. A company by the same name has successfully created prototypes of glass that has the potential to converting sun’s energy into electricity. Solar Windows can change how the city sky scrappers draw current from the grid, powering themselves with Solar Windows placed on their building exteriors.

    Nanowires based panel

Also called the Hairy Solar Panel, these use carbon-nanotube fabric laced with light-absorbing nanowires, which can absorb more energy from the sun. They are better than the silicon-based panels and can be more efficient in solar harvesting.

    Efficiency

How many of you know about the efficiency of gasoline combustion? They burn at average 28% to a max of 55% efficiency in rare cases, wasting the remaining fuel in heat. Likewise, Photovoltaic cells have their limits on how much electricity they produce as well, vis-a-vis the total solar power available.

    Other Innovations in Solar energy

Apart from improving the panel technology, other areas saw a lot of action as well. These include solar plant set up, distribution and innovative ideas on how to spread the usage of solar. Having your solor plant will help you make money in future, so what are you waiting for?

    Microinverters

Solar panels produce power in Direct Current or DC (invented by Thomas Edison) for effortless storage. Our homes are wired to work on Alternative Current or AC (invented by Nikola Tesla). The old set up of inverters used to be inefficient and cost intensive. However, the advent of microinverters has helped make setting up a solar power plant affordable and efficient.

The current average is 23% globally. However, efforts are on by many companies achieve much more than that.

    Improved Storage

Batteries play a crucial role in solar-power generation. If the solar panels connect to the grid, you do not need to store the electricity. In all other cases, there is a need to save excess power that produced, so that it is available for use during night time or when limited sunlight is available.

Batteries did not improve at the same pace as other technologies, as efforts were made to get better at converting the heat/light into energy. That is changing, and pretty fast as now, we race to store ever more power in the smallest possible package. Tesla leads in that today, offering better battery packs at less than half the cost.

    Solar Tethering

We all have used data from our phones, connecting it via WiFi to our laptops where there is no LAN or local WiFi connectivity available. Solar tethering works somewhat in a similar fashion.

Solar plants require an expense commitment before you can start getting returns on your investment. At times, these can be expensive for average homeowners. Hence, to those who have managed to generate more than what he can consume, the private or public city grid can buy the excess power.

In turn, the excess energy can be purchased over by a buyer who wants to use solar but does not have money to invest in a plant. He can pay for the solar unit based on fixed price, thus making income for the harvester.

    Portable Solar Lights and Fan

A large part of the world still has little to no access to electricity. Mini Solar plants, attached to portable lights and fans help get then access to basics during night time. These compact lamps also help charge mobile phones, run other local business tasks, etc.

There are many such projects in Africa and Asia, which have met with tremendous success. Such small solar power plants help make life easier for the populace in remote regions.

    Water desalination and purification

Another exciting innovation is in the area of desalination of water. A team of scientists from MIT and Jain Irrigation Systems have come up with a method to desalinate seawater, disinfecting with UV and make it available for people who lack access to drinkable water.

As again with the previous point, electricity and water are scarce resources for many living in remote areas. Drinking clean water helps reduce water-borne diseases, but most of the villagers do not have access to them.

    Conclusion

Harvesting Sun may still be expensive to install, and return on investment is not quick enough, but the advancing technology is making it easier and much cheaper. We can fix Solar panels in all those areas that receive maximum sunshine throughout the year for best effect. However all those areas where we do not have enough sunshine, we will need to export electricity from where we can generate.

There are various teams of experts; some are making floating solar panels in the sea, some others are testing balloons in the air, while another group is trying to capture the non-visible light spectrum (like infra-red). Sure, there is future in it.

I hope that we limit carbon production, lest we may face a carbon-cloud future, where solar may not help.

Trip Trailer launched of our recent breakfast ride

I am happy to share with you the launch of our Trip Trailer, which will be followed by a short movie. Of course this sounds like we are into serious business, but trust me we are not! It is just a fun trip trailer and a fun trip movie created just to feel different.

Okay, so I was writing a post about lack of an opportunity to do a weekend or a breakfast trip. It is in the drafts. Thankfully, I do not have to post it now! 🙂

So it all happened in a jiffy and a ride on Saturday morning was planned to Igatpuri. While we were sure we could make that trip, what we hoped is if we could extend the trip to Bhandardhara. It is a very scenic place near the village of Shendi and also home to the highest peak in Maharashtra (more…)

  • Yeti. The Himalayan beast in my life

Yeti. The Himalayan beast in my life

Yeti is what I named him. Many preferred to call it a goat, a Himalayan Goat. But for me, it never looked like one. It always looked like the beast. Untamed, but well mannered and imposing. It has been an agonizing three and half months of a wait, to be honest. Waiting time for my beast was killing me. My friends who knew about this decision kept on asking me on the status, adding salt to the burn. On 16th of Aug., 2016 he arrived. I got to see first glimpse of Royal Enfield Himalayan, reserved in my name at the show room. (more…)

  • A silent sinful protest!

It is not unknown that you come across some people whom you don’t like, and then some you just down right hate. Oh yeah, everyone has that list of people and I am sure you do too. So it recently happened that this ex-colleague of mine is enjoying life to the fullest extent and I am sinfully feeling bad

It has been days since I last posted, with a post on my flying with experience Vistara in drafts. It is becoming difficult, but I am positive about me posting regularly. Call me a liar.

Yeah it is sinful to think it that way!

May be not. If you take my opinion, that is. If only you could really imagine and feel what I felt when I saw some recent updates on their social profile (haha, yes s/he is on my FB friends list). This person conspired my exit from one of my previous organization, but before the sinful plans could be executed, I excused myself and quit. That surely was a win for him/her, I just avoided it from being messy and held my self-respect.

Historically, this person had always been a treasured child, which earned him/her with multiple promotions in short span of time, with more than year worth of time offs and work from home (a criteria considered negatively while promoting others) in between. These two were the very reasons I was told do not entertain a promotion conversation for one of my own team member (who thoroughly deserved it).

Yeah, it is life and I cannot but help ignore it, alas, I am human after all.

  • I blog. I live. It is me. #ResponsibleBlogging

I blog. I live. It is me. #ResponsibleBlogging

To talk about being responsible and put things in context, let me redirect you to one of my recent post on bomb blasts in Pakistan. It was horrible, but there was a particular behavior the caught my eye. Earlier this year and late last year, there were two other blasts that shook the world – in France and Belgium. It is a sad example, I know but one that teaches how selective we are. My Facebook timeline was flooded (Disclaimer: I did not do it on both occasions) with people updating their profile picture over-laced with the French and the Belgian flag.

But the same thing did not happen for the blasts that happened in Pakistan. Does that have to do with the frequency of blasts in Pakistan or the hatred that we carry for them? I also posted the article link on Facebook, earned absolute Zero likes and comment – may be the text I wrote there was probably in-your-face!

  • Pakistan looses more lives to bomb blast again

Pakistan looses more lives to bomb blast again

A suicide bomber exploded at Gulshan-e-Iqbal park, Lahore in Pakistan. It is a park for god’s sake and there were a lot of families including children spending their Sunday evening there when the blasts took place. Not much information has been forthcoming, but majority of the dead are women and children. More than 65 are feared dead, a loss that the fanatics will never ever be able to repay.

It is sad that people of Pakistan had to go through this since more than a decade. The blasts have been frequent and have caused so much loss of life and injuries and pain! I could only wish it stopped now than ever! In 2015, more than 1000 people have lost their lives. Wikipedia has a list dedicated to terrorists attack in Pakistan. Go through the link for each year starting 2000, and you will only be human to feel utterly dejected. It is sad that instead of tackling this insurgency, the government and the ISI are busy thinking about India.

In 2015 alone, more than 1000 people have lost their lives.

  • 4 months away from an idiot box

4 months away from an idiot box

So I moved into my new house about 4 months ago, and I have not got a TV yet for my home. It has been those four months where I did feel missing the TV around the house, and it absence has definitely helped me use my laptop more. Err.., that is not why I didn’t get the TV yet but then again, I do miss it.

That idiot box is being missed by my wife has been turning this thought around of avoiding TV for some weeks now, especially with my wife wishing to catch up the ongoing T20 after coming home. As I spoke to a colleague today, realized that her child has learned a lot from watching youtube.com and TV also kind of rekindled the thought to get one. The decision is still not been made, but mostly I would give in.

And the reason why I would give in has nothing to do with what others are saying. It has to do with what I am missing out on. If you remember one of my previous posts on the idiot box was about my craze for wild life, travelling and science channels, I have been missing watching them as well. The idiot box, after all is not idiot if the one watching on the other end is thoughtful enough. Not having TV around also means that I am missing out on learning something new from this medium. Watching such channels was never frowned up on by my family unless it was becoming a daily affair and made them miss their regular shows.

The idiot box, after all is not idiot if the one watching on the other end is thoughtful enough.

And one of the things that I want my daughter to do is to pick up these good habits that I have. Like reading when she grows up or never to stop learning – the two of my activities that has held me in good stead. The third one could be blogging, but she is still too young to do that just yet and I would let her decide if she wanted to do it.

What do you think about your idiot box at home? Have you ever thought of getting disconnected from it?

  • #HAppiNess – looking out for you

My wife could kill me for sharing this here, but it is the feeling that makes me share it with you. #HAppiNess. That capital A is deliberate and is the first letter of my wife’s name. And so is the letter N – that is what my daughter’s name starts with.

That is my happiness, and how we go about celebrating togetherness. In this busy life, to say the least, family is the one of the strongest reason for happiness. The reason you spend those extra hours at office so that you can get more for the family and yourself. The reason you would love to sneak out a holiday and spend at home. Or take them to a place they would love. That happiness in sacrifices that we all make. Yes, those many and more, for the happiness.

  • 10 not-so-common questions on home insurance policies

I have been thinking a lot about a home insurance policy and in the process, did a lot of research. Me and my wife recently got our first house and for all of us, our home is one of our precious assets that gives me the comfort and peace after a long tiring day at work. It is the place where you sink in and to think of the risks of anything happening to it is seriously worrying. You put in all your savings, risking a huge EMI from a Bank. EMI stands for Easy Monthly Installments, but is should be HMI – hardest monthly installment. 😀

PS: It is rather just coincidence that Vijay Mallya story doing rounds these days and I am writing this :P.

Home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than magician ever spoke, or spirit ever answered to, in the strongest conjuration.” Charles Dickens

    So what can go wrong?

I for one, cannot forget the day of 26th of July, 2005. Apart from holding a very special place in my heart for a different reason, that day scared the heck out of me. Yes, it did. Natural calamities like such as an earthquake, and flood has time and again caused loss of life and property alike. The life comes to an abrupt halt whenever any natural calamity strikes and the destruction it brings with it leaves unbearable financial and emotional pain. You cannot rebuild a life that could not be saved, but you can rebuild your life.
